I need some advice. My shar pei has very rough skin (patchey) on his nose. It has cracks on it. I put some vaseline on overnight. Seemed to help but then seemed to get even worse. Is this normal????

is this pei over a year old..I would continue putting Vaseline on it a couple times a day..If it does not clear up you may want to do a 6 panel Thyroid test with Dr.Dodds...You may also want to add some Omega 3 fatty acids to his diet..

j.l. could one open up a capsule of the fish oil and rub it on the skin? it may smell a bit but it has a kind of oily feel to it. im asking because i no the fish oil is good for the skin/coat, so would it make a difference if its ingested or if its rubbed directly on the skin?

I make sure to wipe down the nose and mouth area when they finish eating.

I have been using Berts Bee in a chap stick tube and just run it across the nose area. I really like it because of it being like a chap stick and easy to use.

thank you all for your responses. Yes, the crackly skin is strickly on his nose. I am giving him the fatty acid fish oil regularly now. I have MAJOR ear issues to deal with. When I first got on here my shar pei, Charcoal was on steroids for Another round of ear problems. The steroids work temporarily so I didnt ask about the ear problems then but I am Desperate for him now. Please read and respond. Thank you All!!!

You may have a chronic yeast problem going on. Have they figured out what is causing the ear infections? There could even be a resistant fungal infection that can cause this. I would have a vet figure out what is causing the ear infections. Also medications can cause the dry, cracking skin on the nose.
