Sam is having fever/FSF right now, when I woke up this morning, he won't let me touch his muzzle. Good thing, hubby is home, gave aspirin every six hours, and when I got back from work, his muzzle is a little better, not too swollen...

I have question, is colchicine over the counter?
I was giving sam, homeopathic meds...before the fever, but when he had a fever this morning, i am just giving him the aspirin, and I gave him, antihistamine too.

please pray for sammy... I am just too :( tonight... im so glad, im OFF tomorrow so I can take care of him...

I read about FSF/swollen hock, done my research, but any suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated. thank you.
joanne

Does Sam have a history of FSF fevers? Swollen muzzle does not necessarily mean FSF, as it can also be caused by other less harmful reasons even though just as frightening. Is it possible that he got into something outside...beesting maybe. Was both side of muzzle swollen or just one side?

Sounds like you've done okay with the aspirin over the hours of dosage.

Colcichine is a prescription drug from your vet.

Please keep us posted.........

but now, I am more familiar... he is 4 years btw.

oh, i need a script for colchine? thanks..... i think im gonna try, once his fever subsides...
we're moving to Marlton, nj... any pet friendly vets in the area?

I give Murphi Pepsid and tums crushed up with alittle water in a syringe, that stops his vomiting

yesterday was bear's first fever in about 5 months and the major difference that only his muzzle was swollen and none of his limbs were.
i gave him 200 mg of bufferin aspirin, let him suckle on ice cubes. then around noonish i gave him a benadryl and that not only let him rest (by this time his temp had gone down from 104.8 at 5 am to 102.6 at noon) but also really helped with his muzzle.

i read a lot of great things about colchicine on the website and also on dr. vidt's website. i spoke with my vet and another vet in the area and both sugested not to put bear on it. but the best thing you can do is inform yourself to the fullest and make the best decision for your pei.

i ended up giving bear another 220 mg of bufferin last night around 9 pm because his temp was at 102.4. and then i gave another benadryl this moring just to help.

with everything htat happens, its always good to keep a log of what you do. big hugs to you and your pei.

sometimes i also give bear half a tablet of pecid ac (brand or generic). the vet told me that bufferin aspirin is easier on the stomach. and that pepcid is safe to give bear too if i notice he is sick to his stomach.

Colchicine has to be Rx'd by the Vet.

There is also the option of using the FSF homeopathic protocol too which many have had good success with also when it is as directed and along with a natural diet and chemical/toxin free lifestyle. Pets4homeopathy is the only place that I am aware of with a treatment protocol developed specifically for FSF.

Whether you go with either treatment protocol they still need regular screening (2-4 times a year Urine Specific Gravity test and at least once or twice a year a full urinalysis and Chem 20 blood panel) and if they are fevering frequently (or have other symptoms) a full 6 panel thyroid test should be run. You need to keep up with your Vet or homeopath so treatment can be adjusted as needed.

Understand that either treatment protocol will not necessarily stop the fever episodes themselves. The purpose of the protocol is to limit the effects caused by the chronic inflammation that can lead to amyloidosis. Some dogs will have a decrease in fever episodes severity and frequency but many will still have the occassional episode.
