Hello ladies and gents,

It's my first time on the forum so please be gentle. I hope I haven't broken any forum rules by not introducing myself elsewhere on the forum. And... forgive me if this question has been asked a thousand times before.

Is six months a good time to neuter my male Shar Pei? It seems that many people recommend neutering at six months while others don't. It would certainly suit me to have him done at this time but am wondering if this would be detrimental to his health or behaviour in any way?

He's nearly five months at the moment and doesn't display any aggressive behaviour or have any nasty little habits.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome Bretta! Glad to have you aboard! The only rule that must be completely adhered to in this forum is pictures. We gotta have 'em! :P We are addicts!

Anyway, there has been much debate over the best time to neuter. The link below will take you to a previous thread on the subject.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12849&p=172405&hilit=early+neutering#p172405

Please read and let us know what you decide! Don't forget the pictures. We especially require puppy ones!

thanks for the welcome.

Mmm... well it seems that everyone has different ideas and I'm still no closer to being dissuaded from doing it at six months... maybe nine months would be a good compromise? Of course, his health is of paramount importance which is why I'd like to read different people's opinions and experiences.

In the meantime here's some piccies. The first pic is of "Stan" at just over 7 weeks and the other is of him at 16 weeks.

welcome to the forums :) STAN is adorable :) where are you located? my zanzabar blue was 1 year old when he was neutered, and my foster dog was just spayed yesterday, she's 9 years old  she had been used to breed litter after litter and dumped when she got older  my pets usually go under the knife at 1 year old for those surgeries.

Albert was just under 6 months old, that is the age that the Docs here in the UK like to do it... he was absolutely fine, I was neurotic, but he recovered quickly, didn't have any issues and I've had no problems since, he doesnt get any urges to mate with furniture etc....

Your boy is delicious xx

Like I am sure you read, it is kind of up to you. I neutered Ollie at around a year. Mostly, it affects their height and musculature. Unneutered dogs don't tend to grow as tall and tend to be more muscular, where as neutered dogs may grow taller and be a bit leaner.

As long as you are are making sure he isn't able to escape and get anyone pregnant, I see no problems waiting until he is 9 months or a year!

Geeze Rachel, with Namaste over 22 inches and a good 70 lbs (unneutered) I don't even want to THINK about how huge he would be if he had been snipped...lol.

Welcome to the forum Bretta! Stan is gorgeous!!!
:)

thanks for all the replies everybody.

I think I'll have him done at six months, and it'll be a bonus if he grows a little bigger as he's still a little squirt at the moment.

Oh my god JL- Namaste weighs 70 lbs?! I struggle to keep Tugg in the high 40's. I can't imagine having one weigh 70.

Miles is over 60 now, but he is so short and stubby. I think i may get DNA analysis at his next check up. I suspect he is partially a bull dog.

The ONLY thing Albert humped was his fluffy paws bed cushion... , got rid of that, so now he doesn't do it at all... Sorry Alb.... I got rid of it as I came in one day and he had obviously been 'going at it' all morning and was still doing the movement, his dink and goolies looked all swollen and strange and he was doing to movements without the cushion, I was so scared that he had turned himself inside out, I was calling Tone... "Tone, Tone, there is something wrong with Alb, quick we need to get him in the car... I rang the Vet... she laughed... - give it a few minutes and it will be ok... - it was.... so the cushion went into the bin...

Bet you all needed to know that...!

ha, ha... that made me laugh, Caroline.

Stan has been having quite a few "lipstick" moments lately. He also gets his paws cushion, runs around it folding and tucking it as he goes until it is shaped and sized like a dog and then start to hump it... I normally thwart his plan before he can carry out his mission properly. :D
