Ive recently wanted to take more interest into what I feed my babies, prob because of researching the best solution to feed Remington KF wise and the fact he couldnt keep our normal kibble down.

Ive always had everyone say to me that Pei's shouldnt have grains due to allergies, but have recently seen a growing number of people advising others to feed grain based things as part of a homecooked theme. This would include things like wholemeal toast and scrambled egg or oatmeal for breakfast. This confuses me, so I questioned this on a facebook thread, but unfortunately its turned nasty

Are we risking or tempting allergies by feeding away from what they are genetically / geographically used to? with a lack of wheat / oats /maise in China, is that why they do better with fish etc?

Are we causing more allergies by being too precious and cutting grain out before even knowing if they can tollerate it?

Just curious on thoughts

I choose to feed all my pets grain free foods. Mostly because they do not need as much grain/carbs as we do.

I actually had my cat get ill from the amount of grain in dry cat food and I was feeding what is considered a good premium food to her at the time. We switched to grain free and wet food with her (since many cats do not take in enough moisture on their own) and managed her symptoms.

Many grains such as corn are fillers in pet food and have little nutrional value for the animal. Other grains such as wheat are common allergens in dogs. My cocker spaniel was allergic to wheat for example.

Not sure if my Nala is allergic or not to certain grains like wheat but i changed her food a month ago after she had an ugly rash which i had taken her to the vet for. I put her on a grain free food and the rash is gone and she hasnt broken out since. I also started her on Hyvitality and probiotics daily, she is doing wonderful. This forum has been so helpful and has given me a peace of mind over and over.

i think each dog is different, my first pei was raised on grain based food and did fine, lived to be almost 15. i feed lots of homecooked foods here and like to give my pei a mix of meat, potatoes and veggies. i've fed rice mixed into their food as well, they seem to tolerate most foods well. interesting topic :)

Grains and refined carbs in the diet contribute to systemic yeast overgrowth. Yeast organisms are hyaluronidase secretors. Hyaluronidases degrade the hyaluronan that Pei have in abundance and this causes inflammation and yeast overpopulation on skin causes extreme itching. Chronic inflammation can cause amyloidosis.

I have three pei. Two had been fed commercial dog food with grains as pups by the breeder and one who never had any at all and was fed home cooked or raw. The first two have allergies and yeast issues, the third, none. Zip. In perfect harmony with her food. I am convinced that they only way pei should eat grains is through green tripe.
