Hello there. I am new to this forum however do enjoy reading everyones advice and experiences. I have a Blue Horsecoat pei who is 4years old. My problem is this, LLoyd is very dominant and if anyone knocks at the door he barks......good thing. When I let people in he will have a sniff at them, maybe jump up but as soon as they are settled he calms down. However, when anyone goes to leave, he follows them and becomes very aggressive even biting at them which includes me if I try to push him away. LLoyd will bite me if I try and take something away from him and is aggressive towards dogs, not all but most. He is very protective of me and he is definatly the boss in the house. He hates the vet and cannot be muzzled as he is too aggressive for the vet to get anywhere near to and has on occasions snapped at the vet. I love LLoyd just the way he is however I am keen on finding out why he has a pronlem with visitors leaving the house. Regards :!:

Teach Lloyd an 'exit routine'/ It will take time and two people.
Find a friend who is willing to help. Practice for only 10 minutes every day.
If he back slides just cut session short and start over the next day.

Give him a 'place' in the house to go to when exiting/entering. Practice leaving and one person instructs dog
what to do.
You may need to use a harness or leash at first to teach him to stay in his place.
Don't tug or force him . Just calmly walk him to his place. We have put
up a gate so that our dogs learn the place is in the hall and eventually removed the gate. One of our dogs
goes to his bench at the back window. He will go there now on command. Bench.

Use praise only when he successfully stays there. Do not yell or correct him if he leaves his place.
Just use your body to back him up and lay down in his place. It has to be a place of calm for the dog/not stress.

I taught our shar pei how to wait. It also takes two people and a twenty minute sessions at first.
Leave and one person stays and instructs dog where to wait in their place. We use a favorite blanket
or kong and give it to our dogs when they are calmly waiting.

If this does not improve after several sessions then you may need to go back to crate training.
Hope this helps.

It sounds like your dog has the upper hand. You need to establish yourself as the alpha. Right now he is running the show. Please follow the above advice as a start to get him under control. If you can't do it on your own, seek the help of a professional. Make sure he gets plenty of exercise.

My Cosmo would warn me to stop whatever it was that he didn't like, then bite me if I didn't stop. I learned how to handle him. He also was a resource guarder. You can overcome this with work and patience. I feed Cosmo (4 yrs old) by hand. He gets nothing without working for it. A sit, a wait, a down ,a quiet, whatever. But he gets nothing without doing something. This aling with hand feeding him his meal ( the whole meal for a bout two months, me standing with the bowl at my chest height. Cosmo sitting or standing quietly and taking the food gently ). Now we have him on maintenance. He gets handled the first three or four bits of food before I put it down. Now, if he does snap at me, he doesn't puncture the skin. He has a softer mouth. Try the Nothing in Life is Free along with the hand feeding and you will see an improvement. Really.

I would consider getting a sedative from the vet, vetting is so very important (they can get the muzzle on him and keep him calm . Please read up on Dr . Dobbs, information on Thyroid. I would consider addressing his behavior 2 fold , training even if you need to hire a trainer to come into your home. Also make sure thyroid is checked , many times in pei even a normal range Thyroid in the Low end needs treatment - Dr. Dobbs does this by comparing differences between breeds and many other functions. She's the best
