Ok, Pearl has not got long to go now but I am a little concerned about her sleeping arrangements. The whelping box is set up where she normally sleeps, at the moment with her bed in it. However the last few nights she has slept at the top of the stairs. My stairs are really, really steep and I do worry, in case she starts up there or falls down.
Is she likely to be normal and got to whelping box? As I said her bed is in there and she will sleep in there in the day. When should I take her bed out and put the newspaper down? What else should I put in there for the event? Vetbed? Nothing tilll after?
The scan lady reckons this Thursday by measurements. Day 63 is Sunday from 1st mating. As I understand, pei are early whelpers, so I am plumping for Fri/Sat

I don't know anything about the welping box I bet some more will chime in on that. But I would almost install a baby gate across those stairs very easy to do. I have some across some extra bedrooms just to keep them out of them.
Good luck Pearl your mom is gettng all her duck in a row for your new arrivals.

I agree baby gate for the stairs..You can put papers all around her bed when she starts contractions...I would take the bed out and put a nice thick blanket or two down for her....Its got to be easy for puppies to be with her and nurse.

I agree with the baby gate, as some moms will move babies - IT SEEM to me that she is weary of sleeping downstairs without you- So maybe set up a sleeping bag near her box. Can't wait! I am sure that JL will walk you through this ... It is a long time for me... Lots of clean towels and sterile water, I used dental floss to tie of umbilicals (maybe these days they have something for that) You sometimes have trouble with mom doing her job or doing it too well . first litter If she doesn't clean the pup off or they come too fast you may have to help - google for birthing cpr. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_gi ... ppies.html

Dont know about Pei but when Maggie my Rotti had her pups we had whelping box lined with vet bed set up in the conservatory, special drops to put on the pups mouth as they were born. She had the pups in the living room on the carpet, ate as many placenta as she could before we could get to them. What a night. we also had bottles and special milk powder (just in case) but it all went well they are better at this than we give them credit for comes natually to most breeds. Good Luck

She slept in her own bed last night, although she was up and down through the night. A baby gate is an idea but she frets if she can't get to me, so I think a blow up air bed in her room is in order Hopefully, she won't pinch it and I can get some sleep

That is what I did Deb, put the inflatable mattress in the room and that is where I slept until the event was over. Chloe just seemed to know that was where she was suppose to go. I hope it all goes easy for the two of you.

I'd advise you keep a close watch over Pearl when the time is close and she starts to get restless because sometimes dogs have strange ideas about where they want to give birth.
We set up a whelping box in the breakfast room which had french windows opening onto an enclosed patio, but at the very last minute Tarn my Border Collie wandered into the patio area and disappeared under a bush. Nothing would persuade her to come out and a few hours later she gave birth to six healthy puppies ..... in the middle of a thunderstorm!
Mama dog, the puppies, my son and I were drenched to the skin but as soon as she'd cleaned the last one off she carefully carried each one back to the whelping box. After that experience I swore we'd never have puppies again.
