So I am looking for volunteer opportunities in Phoenix area. My work hours have been reduced to about 24 hours/week, and well, I love peis and figured its time to start giving back. Anyone know how I can get involved? This is really what I want, but I would prefer a referral as I am striking out on my own.

I have tried Craigslist, signed up with a few national organizations, but no real leads. I did talk with this crazy lady on craigslist who says she's a sinking rescue agency out of California, she commutes here and there weekly where she has 2-3 houses here full of animals but no caretakers. From speaking with her on the phone today, she is completely money motivated. It sounds like she took advantage of some laws to turn a bad house investment into a non profit and now houses over 200 dogs, about 50 per house, crated and they only get out once a day and barely get fed. she went on about how these foster parents are costing her money, and the medical is costing her money and how she can't even pay her court fines for past fines because she doesn't have $300 also told me about how they have all of these other issues and is going to court because "her terribel neighbors keep calling the police" like they are the bad people.

As terrible as it sounds, I don't know if I can go over there and see these poor dogs stacked in crates knowing they get less than an hour out every day and live in a stinky, poop filled house. It opens my eyes to the need, but I really believe seeing that, and knowing that I really can't make a difference In that direct environment breaks my heart. ...I hope you don't think I am a bad person for not wanting a part of that, knowing that animals are suffering, but I think I also know my own limitations and would completely go off on that lady. Anyway, I would honestly like to get involved with a legitamate organization where I can be helping but also not having to duck the cops. I live in Phoenix and would love to get involved, even if it means doing the dirty work. Thanks for any suggestions & contacts!! Kristen

it sounds like she has way too many animals, " a hoarder"one person can not take care of that many animals, i can understand her wanting to save them but she is not thinking clearly, and i can see where a neighbor might become upset :? she's not really helping these animals if this is the conditions they are living in :( i have 3 dogs and 2 cats and know how much work that is, i cant even imagine 200+ . i think it's great that you want to volunteer, i use to do it for the SPCA. we took animals to the mall and PETSMART to try to get them adopted :) have you looked into BEST FRIENDS SANCTUARY? i know they are out your way, and that's a wonderful organization :) i hope you can find a way to help. :) sherry

Have you tried any rescue groups in your city listed on Petfinder?

If you can not find a rescue in Glendale then I would look into the spca.. I know being here in Az myself that with all the foreclosures and shortsales that many animals have been abandon by their owners... I personally know several people from Glendale I will ask if any of them know of any rescue and let ya know if I find out anything.

Do you wish to get a Pei rescue contact. I know a great Lady in Phoenix and she might have some rescue or foster ideas. I'll pm you her email.

hi! i dont know if you found something yet, but i just remembered a place that was in las vegas, i went there 10 years ago and loved it! they moved to valentine, arizona near rt. 66. it's called KEEPERS OF THE WILD. i wanted to volunteer there. it is a sanctuary for exotic animals, most were peoples pets. it would be an awesome experience :D :D if this place was near me i would help them in a heartbeat!
