I am the mom of a aussie/shar pei mix that has diabetes and shar pei fever. Wondering if anyone else on this board has a shar pei (or shar pei mix) that has both diabetes and shar pei fever?

Thank you.

Hello and welcome!

I have an Aussie Sharpei mix, my Ella who just turned 13 on July 4th! We are struggling with stomach issues right now.

My other Sharpei mix (possibly pitbull) is Babi whom you see in my avatar and siggy. She has had two unexplained fever episodes and is about 13 or 14 years old.

I'd love to see photos of your dog!

What brought you and your vet to the diagnosis of sharpei fever? Please give us some details about this, age of dog, how heavily wrinkled and sharpei like in appearance, fever history and so on. It may be that the fevering is linked to the diabetes?

Welcome to the forum.

I knew of a Pei that developed diabetes (many years ago)...she didnt have any fever episodes that I know of though. She had developed it at like age 9 or something like that. I remember Bettye (her owner) saying it was a challenge to manage it since she was a rather finnicky eater and her blood sugar would flexuate because of that. That's really the only Pei I have heard of with diabetes. Now FSF/hyaluronanosis, we see way too many that suffer from this breedwide in recent years.

Thank you for the welcomes.

Sydney is an 11.5 year old female, spayed, aussie-shar pei mix. She developed the fevers in 2007 with extreme swollen hocks. Saw a number of specialists to try to rule out everything else and it was determined that it was indeed shar-pei fever. She developed diabetes in November 2010. She started another episode of shar pei fever last Wednesday - it was her first episode since being diagnosed with diabetes and man - it's tough. During the prior episodes we would get it under control. This time she had sores develop and burst on her legs and severe swelling not just in her back legs, but one of her front legs as well. We have the swelling and fever under control now (still getting the sores to heal), and now her blood sugar is out of control. I have so far been unsuccessful in finding another shar pei or shar pei mix with the fever and diabetes.

Sigh.

Here is my beautiful baby...

She is indeed beautiful!

I would look at treating her FSF and swollen hocks just like a full bred Sharpei.

See the lastest protocol from Dr. Tintle here;

http://www.wvc.vetsuite.com/Templates/ContentPages/More_Info/ClinicContentPage.aspx?guid=e1960164-a40b-4b9f-9179-f29b55742691

Be sure to read the treatment protocol towards the end. Review each suggestion carefully. I suggest you get her on the Hyvitality supplement right away.

Where are you located? Your vet can always consult with Dr. Tintle and I highly suggest you pass on her website with this information.

Sydney is beautiful, I knew Grillgirl would love her. I am sorry Sydney is going thru this. I found Manuka Honey is a great for healing the sores. You might want to try it.

Bless her heart....she is a lovely lady!

I agree with Grillgirl....I would pass along the info from Tintle's website and even consider having your Vet do a consult with her on how to best manage both these issues.

Stunning, Give her a big Hug we all want to see her get well Soon. I would consult with Dr. T as well, about the diabetes , she may have some insight into getting it controlled and it may very well be because of the inflammatory issues (pancreas) as to the Why it is out of whack! Welcome

Thanks everyone!

My vet actually did give me print outs from Dr. Tintle. We have the fever/swelling under control right now (working on getting the open sores healed).

@Sassy - yes - you are right - her blood sugar is out of whack due in part to the inflammatory issues, also, we gave her a steriod shot to control the swelling and make her more comfortable. Prior to this episode - her diabetes was beautifully regulated. She is also on antibiotics for infection in the sores.

Our course of action as of right now is:

Increase insulin to attempt to get down, if it stays high as of tomorrow morning, she will be hospitalized and given a fast acting insulin (called "regular" or "R")
COntinue with antibiotics
Colchicine
Omega Fatty Acids
Fortifloren (probiotic - on order, will take a few days to arrive)
Hyvitality (on order - will take a few days to arrive)

We will let her settle in on these items and then add vitamin c and lecithin.

Not that I hoped for someone to have the issues we are having - I was just hoping that if someone did - they would be in this forum and potentially give me a magic bullet.

Thank you all!

Tami and Syd

What is her regular Diet? We have homeopathic Counsel here available as well. And Lita may be able to assist in the inflammatory issue as well. Her legs will heal , we have seen it here , just takes patience. Medication wise she is at an age where you want to use the least amount needed so I would look to your vet for guidance on that. If he/she were smart enough to look up Dr T. I've got full faith in the advice he's giving.
