I have a 3 months old apricot horsecoat shar pei. He has been eating natural balance premium formula, all of his treats are chicken or fish natural products. He has only had a couple of baths. One with an anti-bacterial shampoo with conditioning oils & one with baby shampoo.

He started to get very flaky on his back, & he has a raceback, I call it, coloring so it's hard to see & is extremely wrinkled. Under the advice of the breeder I used a tea tree mix & a baby oil mix & dotted it on his back with cotton balls a few times a day & started giving him omega 3's. Well now he is bleeding in patches & it looks like puss is oozing out. It's not in an area he's been itching or can even reach so that really worries me. I've also tried giving him a little bit of benadryl as advised but this didn't help the itching.

Please help! It's too late for me to call a vet where we live & I'm so worried about him.

Thank you!

welcome to the forum, where do you live? maybe we can find a shar pei friendly vet in your area. can you post some pics? that would really help. im not good w/ skin issues but alot of the other members are and give very good advice. also if you get a chance, try looking for what your pei's skin looks like in the health section here. i believe you can search it right at the top of the page and you may find some help there ( in past posts). i hope someone can point you in the right direction, i no its scary and frustrating when you just dont no what to do. maybe you should try an oatmeal bath, instead of baby shampoo, also is your pei on hy-vytality? if not thats something to look into. i hope everything works out.

Welcome to the forum!!!

Can you post pics? Also some questions that may help us see what is up.....

Any grain/cereals in the food you are feeding? Any fleas in your area and if so what flea preventative are you using? How long has this gone on? How is her health otherwise? Any lawn or garden chemicals used in yard or areas he is exposed to? Is pup indoor mostly or left outdoors? What areas are actually itching? How warm is it where you live?

Once we have this info and photos we may be able to help you find some answers.

In the meantime I would not use the baby oil/tea tree oil mix for now. Bathe in mild, unscented shampoo, rinse extremely well and dry well. Try a solution of equal parts listerine and water on the oozing spots a couple time a day. If there is ANY possibility of flea exposure get this pup on an external flea preventative (not Frontline as their new formula sucks). Also feed a grain-free food...Natural Balance has these too. Add a couple sardines and some plain yogurt to the food daily.

I would see a vet and have some scrapings done..THe tea tree oil most likely burned his skin..You can put some neosporin on the raw parts.

Please post pics, but your pet should be seen by the vet asap.
