bless her. poor bug. i love my dogs dearly but if either 1 of them had ever shown a mean streak they would automatically become an in house animal. i would not take him/her out into public or let them around other people or animals. the other day my daughter & her friend got bit by a pittbull/mix. the dog chased them and they were screaming in terror. a neighbor ran out side to help and the dog was trying to bit him. the dog was going for their necks and bit them under their arms cuz they were trying to block the dog from getting their face. the girls said they had knocked on the door cuz they were selling smencil for their school and a little boy answered, they asked for his mom, he told the girls" come here i want to show u something." he walked them over to a fence which was suppose to contain the dog. the little boy then starterd to throw rocks at the dogs head. so my daughter told him" hey u should'nt abuse animals". the little boy then punched the dog in the head. my daughter said she was just shocked to see that and before she could say anything the dog had leaped the fence and went right after them. the neighbor said he had never heard a kid scream in such terror. the owner, when she relized what was going on. ran outside grabbed her son and went back into her house to check him out, in the meantime leaving the dog outside still attacking the girls and now the neighbor. finally she came back out and grabbed her dog. by now the neighbor was pissed. he yelled at her for leaving the the dog out there, told her she should of got the dog off the girls as soon as she new what was going on. the cops and the ambulance was called, also myself. it happend 2 streets away from my house. when i got there 2 sec. later the kids were hysterical and hurt. the dog had punctured the skin under their arms. we brought them to the hospital where they cleaned and bandaged the wounds. dr. said it would be very sore but thank god no stiches, the owner paid absolutly no mind to the crying kids in the next yard she waved the cops off when they told her to keep the dog in the house and slammed the door on them. so i called my lawyer. had she been apologetic and sincere i wouldnt have called my lawyer. but now im going all the way w/ this. worst thing is that its not even the dogs fault, it was getting away from being abused. so i no how u feel when ur poor baby is hurt by a viscous animal. i hope ur peiby is ok and his wounds heal quick. all my prayers and blessings go out to your love.

Ick! Poor baby! Only good thing is at least those wrinkles came in handy and nothing important (like the jugular) got hurt. Ugg, I dunno what I'd do if my girl got bitten/attacked. We've got neighbors with territorial terriors that have gotten loose a time or two, but thankfully have left Ginger alone so far. Give Bella lots of hugs and kisses!
@Lola- that sounds terrifying! Your poor girls. I'm glad they made out with only some minor wounds. That poor dog too. Good for them for standing up to that boy ...even if the dog then attacked them. Definitely lawyer up.

I hope Bella is going to be alright. We had an incident when our lil Diva was younger. A larger bully breed got a hold of her and I had her on leash at the time. Thank goodness for sharpei rolly necks. She did not have to get stitches. The vet packed it with medicine and used surgi glue on one place, the rest were punctures. Being all black it was so hard to see how bad her wounds were and horse coat. I was embarassed at first rushing her to vet because there was not alot of blood. She is my first pei. Our vet said it was very good that I did. Peis have different skin than other breeds and heal 'differently'..... Hugs. Oh, and Diva still goes for walks and is not afraid of any dogs. The incident did not leave the impression on her that it did on me. Now I am paranoid.... to greet strange dogs.

I'm so sorry to hear Bella was bitten and I hope she recovers soon. I doubt very much that the mini schnauzer is viscious it''s more likely the dog attacked Bella because it was afraid.
As well as a Pei I also have a Tibetan Spaniel who's the size of a cat. Having been twice attacked by larger off leash dogs she's now terrified whenever she sees one, even though the dog might be several yards away.
Some dogs will react by cowering and trying to flee, others like Chloe will display fear aggression by barking and trying to attack. Obviously not being there I don't know any details but it's possible the attack was triggered by Bella being let off her leash and maybe invading the schnauzer's comfort zone.
Chloe is the first very small dog I've owned and one thing I've learnt is that small dogs can easily become overwhelmed in the presence of larger dogs. In the same situation the moment your wife started to remove the leash I would have picked Chloe up and gone in the opposite direction., which is what the schnauzer's owner should have done

Poor baby! I am so sorry this has happened.
This is why I keep mine leashed and remove them from situations with strange unleashed/uncontrolled dogs and situations that are outside my control, especially dog parks & such. I see these types of conflicts happen all the time with various folks. One can train and work their dogs to the point where their behavior is wonderful....then when they take their dog out it seems there is always some dog uncontrolled and nasty attacking them....and typically the owner of the attacker takes zero accountability...sigh!

I am so sorry the Bella was bitten. My Kaia had to have stitches last May from a dog that gave her a too severe correction. It was my lovely adolescent Kaia's fault (over enthusiastic rushing of an adult dog--) but still! STILL! sigh. I feel your pain. I suggest when you walk her on leash that you bring high value treats and every time you come within sight of another dog (on leash) treat her...alot. She will soon associate on leash dog with lovely treats. Now for unleashed dogs, if you can't get away unseen, push your dog behind you so she feels protected, shout NO! and stamp your feet if you have to to get the creature to turn tail and leave. I look like a crazy woman when this happens but the dogs take one look at me and after a min. they leave. Or if you have treats, throw them behind the unleashed dog and while that pooch is foraging for the treats, you and Bella discretely skedaddle. (Of course my three stop and want their treat too. Hey MOM! not fair! Strange dogs get treats, not us? What is wrong with this picture? You can see their little brain gears turning...)

we that i think she just wanted to play with the schnauzer.wei had paid a high price for the unleashed incident. it cost us $450 for the treatment and she is still playful as usual. will keep the dogs leashed all times from now onward.

My Daisy passed away last year aged 12 yrs old and over the years she was attacked quite severely several times just out of the blue. It seem that the problem is that Sharpei have very different body language to other dogs. The frowning expression and the upright tail is very confusing to other dogs to try and read their body language and therefore some dogs attack first because they think they are about to be attacked.
I have seen quite a few Sharpei that happily exist in a large pack of other pei (some of our peinics have up to 20 Sharpei attending) but as soon as their are other breeds of dogs around there can be grumbles and even fights).
I found the best thing is to learn my own dogs body language and if in doubt dont go to places such as off lead dog parks if they make your dog uncomfortable.

So glad to hear that she got her stitches out and healing well. Sorry that happened. Really ticks me off when people don't control their dogs! Hope that never ever happens to Bella again. Hugs to her

In general other dogs feel pei are being aggressive regardless when they are not... The best advice is to have them controlled to avoid problems..Its a good Idea to carry a spray bottle of water in case you have to spray a dog with attack in mind...

Fraid I can't agree with you busypei because when I walk my dogs who are kept on a leash, it's always my Tibbie who's threatened or attacked by unknown dogs who NEVER have their owners (if they have one) with them.
The same thing happens when we go to my local vet, if I take M'boi on her own other people's dogs will ignore her because she's not interested in them, but if Chloe is with us I have to run the gauntlet of barking dogs, tugging at their owner's leads trying to get to her.
I'm convinced it has something to do with her being tiny as dogs her size are unusual in this area and maybe they think she's a rabbit or a chicken ..... I really don't know!

My dog Penny has been bitten multiple times. Mostly by my parents dogs. They're older mixed mutts that don't like being bothered. Penny wants to play and wrestle, and she gets a bite on the nose here and there. Most of the time a bit of hydrogen peroxide and neosporin does it. Last month she was attacked by my cousin's lab. Come to find out later the lab had attacked another dog at the dog park. Cost $630+ to get her stitched up. She could honestly care less though. She just wanted to play. My cousin so far has given me $20 to pay back the bill. Hopefully he will continue to pay.

I've had several almost attacks with Boo - though thankfully the other dogs were leashed. Are peis somehow disliked/a threat to other dogs? I've heard this can be the case, and most dogs smell mine and growl viciously with teeth bared or lunge at her. I have no idea what the deal is Boo just stands there and watches the other dogs go nuts.
