Hi all,
I just received an email from an Australian pet food store saying they now stock Taste of wild grain free dog foods and wanted to know if anyone else is using this?
Currently Kiara is in Canidae grain free but I would like to mix it up and Taste of wild has 4 different grain free flavors verses Canidae with only two.
We don't have much of a variety in Australia when it comes to grain free.
I have to order it online as none of the 20+ pet food stores within 30km from me sell any grain free whatsoever.

i tried lola on totw, and i didnt like it. her breath smelled horrible and she didnt eat as much as she does now that i got her back on natural balance. my chihuahua didnt seem to like it either. for me it didnt work but maybe it will for you. i mean its worth a try and if it doesnt work you can always go back. one more tip, so that your pei does not get terrible dhiarea, i mean more then usual, introduce it very slowly with her old brand. i hope if you choose totw that it works for you, it has to stink big time to have to order her kibble on line.

I've been using it for years. Me and the dogs love it. It makes The Whole Dog Jornal's list of best dry foods every year. It's a great premium food and one that is easy on the pocket book too.

Our boy had a lot of issues with kibble. TOTW Pacific Stream was one of the few kibbles he did "OK" on. We haven't fed kibble in about two years, so I'm not sure what the quality is like now.

I would NOT feed it If it was the only kibble in the world..
Made by Diamond one of the worst producers of recalled food.
Many pei have had problems with this food.

TotW used to be a very good food , Some use it and like it and have no problems , a few year ago they had recall problems. So I don't use it but I know you are limited in brands over there.

Dan - have you ever tried Ziwipeak or Addiction? I thought both of these brands were manufactured in Australia. They tend to be pretty expensive in the U.S. because of shipping, but may be less so for you. Both are really high quality, have a variety of proteins, and have grain-free options. I tried Addiction Viva La Venison right before switching to RAW. I liked it ... but it was really difficult to find in my area.

We have our babies on Merrick Cowboy Roundup and they love it. We add warm water to make a gravy - they gobble it up like there is no tomorrow.

I have used it on three Pei, good results for each.

Only cons are they are owned by Diamond (diamond doesnt make the food) and they wont say the are equinox free. Good food for the price. But, if you dont mind spending more money, there are better.

On a scale of 1-10 for kibble, i would give it an 8.0. There are a LOT worse foods out there.

I was looking over your selection over there, Canidae and ToTW are really your only two decent options. I was suprised at how much more dog food is compared to the States. Ouch!

Have you thought about supplimenting raw or cooked whole foods? I've had the best results with kibble in morning and Raw at night. You also have a wide variety of great meats at good prices over there in Australia, you might consider looking into that.

Good luck!

I have always used Taste of the Wild, my pei just turned one year old. We mainly use the bison flavored. We have had no problems.

Hi!

I am another in Australia who is researching TOTW because it is now available here.

I have not heard of Addiction. Ziwipeak is ridiculously priced from what I've seen. We can also get Artemis which seems good, but I was wanting to try TOTW because of its low protein. My pei is currently on Canidae but she has noxious gas which I am hoping a change in food may help.

Are people against TOTW because of the recall in 2005 or has there been something since then? What is equinox ?

Do you mean ethoxyquin? (that is what some other threads are referring to) Their website says that it is not included. Does that make it better?

hopefully when my posts are visible they will be in order and make sense

In the last couple of years there has been some Pei with bleeding from rectum ..Others had intestinal problems..There have been enough Pei that had problems to stay far away from it...Even a few Pei Is to many and a warning..Some Pei just stopped eating it.Just the fact its a Diamond product is enough for me to stay away..I did feed Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul..When it was removed from the safe food dog list I stopped feeding it ...That was a Diamond product as well.

Years ago I contacted them directly about the use of ethoxyquin. They indicated they didn't use it. I've since moved and no longer have the email address (and thus the email they sent). I think I might have posted it here. It would have been b/t 2006 and 2008, I think. I don't recall Enzo having any issues, but we stopped using it years ago.

Sorry. Yes, ethoxyquin, the preservative used in fish that some say is a cancer causing.

What I gathered from contacting them and reading; It is present in the fish during shipping to their facility. When they cook the fish, they state that the ethoxyquin is released. When they tested the food, it was not present. I have read this elsewhere and have heard other big companies do the same. I cant say i am completely comfortable with it.

Ive been researching dog foods for the better part of three years now. I have never heard of any issues some are stating here. I am not saying it didnt happen, just that its suprising to hear some of it.

In the end, some dogs just dont like certain foods. I hate tomatoes, if i accidentally eat just a little, it will make me puke; the smell alone will cause me to have dry-heaves. But, it doesnt mean they are bad....

Hmm..The FAQ of their website says that the people they get their meat from don't use it and neither do they.

I am unable to find any other information online about it making dogs sick...only about a batch being called back due to too much protein.

Guess I will have to think on it some more.

Thanks for the replies.

Actually if you make a quick internet search you will notice that everyone who stock fish products use ethoxyquin by default(in certain percentages),in the US.
You need special license to use anything else besides that. Now TotW had a major change in their policy few years back. They guarantee the use of ethoxyquin free products but not the way most companies do.
What i mean is this ..quite few companies state that they do not use fish products preserved with ethoxyquin themselves but as stated above, almost everyone whos in the fish business uses ethoxyquin unless they have a special license not to.Practically this means that they may not use ethoxyquin themselves but their suppliers use, unless stated otherwise.
TotW provides guarantees that either be themselves or their suppliers they do NOT use products preserved with ethoxyquin.

Im feeding the salmon recipe for 4 months now and im very pleased with it.My Mollie likes it a lot and her coat is bright, overall i'd recommend at least trying it out for a month or two.

Thanks Everyone,
Premium dog food in Australia is priced around $100-130 a large bag so naturally you want a good quality food.
Kiara has really bad gas but we put it down to the sardines, It never crossed our minds that it could be the Canidae.
I will look into Ziwi aswell thanks.

I have heard that California Natural, Innova and Evo are branching out so it will be more available at online stores (rather than just Pets Paradise and similar pet stores) so that could maybe be another option.

Yes I had heard of those but I won't support Pets Paradise or any of it's associates.

The people who have just taken over the company that makes the foods have just expanded their distribution. The places that are selling it online have nothing to do with Pets Paradise or any other of the pet stores.
