Hi Everyone! My name is Joyce and I have a gorgeous Pei named Jackie Chan. We call him Chan Chan. He will be a year old on 2/15. He is a Dilute Platnum. I have battled demotex mange since he was 4 months old. It took about 2.5 months to get him cleared up from his first outbreak. I chose to use Ivermectin which I obtained from my vet. Along with the Ivermectin, he was on antihistamine and antibiotics. I noticed about 2 weeks ago he started shedding like crazy and then of course here come the itching and redness. I know it is his mange flaring up. I decided to try and save some visits to the vet and started him on Bendryl and Ivermectin Paste 1.83% that is in the form of wormer for horses. It seems to be working. He appears to have stopped shedding so much and the reddness and sore spots are going away. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Has anyone used Mitaban? I am not to happy about the thought of using because its so toxic. Would love opinions! Joyce and Chan :)

I have used both and honestly had better luck with the mitoban. You might consider having his thyroid checked as may be contributing. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum. Have they confirmed that this is mange again? Could be something else....many Pei issues have similar symptoms and sometimes they have combo issues. If there is a demodex issue I prefer Mitaban. I have used that a number of times over the years....alot back in the 80s when the Vets all gave steroids for everything which often led to demodex population surges. Never had any problems from Mitaban.

A big culprit with Pei skin/coat issues is yeast overgrowth. This can be from Candida or Malassezia yeast. The first is primarily dietary in nature and the second is more environmental. What is her diet? Any ear issues? Any odor?

Hi JL, I really don't think he is yeasty....ears are fine and he really does not have an odor. Clavomox on standby though....the ivermectin seems to be working....I am going to give to the end of the week. If I see anymore red spots at the end, then I will probably have him scrapped. I just can't wait for this shedding to stop! :) I feed him Avoderm, grain free, beef and potatoe. I would prefer the salmon and potatoe but he hates it.

I love your pic! What gorgeous puppies!

Building the immune system is important as that plays a role in mange. You may want to look at supplements to add that may do that
