So sorry to hear that:(

I do have some questions for everyone. What are your thoughts on shipping? I have heard never to do this! What do you think is a reasonable price ?

I've had several of my pei shipped/flown to me, all went well. i think shipping rates are probably about 350 now, is that the price you were inquiring about? there are also courier services available who will bring any pet right to your front door, they are transported in cars/suv's with crates

Just didn't know how to pick out the spammers. The only place I know to look is on Puppyfind.com and I heard it's loaded with Spam people.Would like to drive their to meet the puppy in person. My husband has agreed to 5hrs away 10hrs round trip.

We have also shipped all but one of our puppies without any issues. I think it is most important to establish a relationship with the breeder long before you go look at the puppies. Do your research on the breed and try and ask as many questions as possible. I know there is a post on this forum on how to pick out a good quality breeder. Our cost has usually been in the 250-350 range. How about a rescue?

Please do a lot of research before you buy. There are a lot of bad breeders out there that ship unhealthy pups. Get qualified referrals if possible. Maybe someone can send you a PM on ethical breeders that they know. I've had 3 Pei shipped to me. One from New Jersey and two from South Carolina. They all had health issues that cost me a fortune. The shipping wasn't a problem but the breeding caused many genetic health issues. Good luck in your search. This breed isn't easy on your pocketbook but they are unlike any other dog. It is so hard to resist them.

you will find many breeders/backyard breeders on Puppyfind.com and lots of them wont even let anyone come to their home, i've had several say "oh we will drive halfway to meet you in a parking lot" or "we dont let people come to our home" but they will be more then happy to ship him to you! red flags! definately good to meet the breeder and all her dogs before making a commitment, also check the BBB and research the breeder, ask for many references, vet references etc.......you can not be too careful when buying a shar pei

Then push the learn more button.
You can plug in your zip code for AKC breeder names.
Minis are not AKC.
You can run a search on local miniature clubs in your area but
none of them are AKC to my knowledge. Not yet anyway.

My mother has had many puppies over the years shipped to her that she went to the airport to get and never had a problem. However, she always e-mailed/talked to the breeder a lot first and went through some extensive interviewing and all that before doing it. (which I know just kind of reiterates what everyone else has been saying :P)

I may be wrong, but I thought that many official breed websites list breeder referrals a lot of times? That might be a promising start for you, and definitely talk to more of the experienced pei breeders/owners on here :D Good luck!

just wondering... how do you know if you have a mini, or just a runt of the litter when its a puppy. can't you only tell if its a actual mini at full adult height, when its an adult? how can people sell puppies as minis. maybe its just slow to grow, or just smaller than other litter mates...

Everyone is giving very good information here. Research and ask questions read this forum from bottom to top and over again. If picking up your new pup is not an option I have had great results using Delta Dash.

I also had a very good experience with this service. It's like a one stop shop it will pick up and transport to airport get heath certificate supply a proper crate and make all flight arrangements for you and track the flight all the way thru. It's quite expensive but I was very pleased with the service.

Sorry you asked for prices I should have listed them.

Of course your cost is going to go on the distance and size of crate and weight. But using Delta Dash from WA to LA it was an est of 350.00.

Using the other service I mentioned was for CA to LA bigger crate more weight and longer distance and I used everything I mention above and the cost if I remember correctly was 1100 dollars. Expensive I know but was very pleased everything was handled correctly and I had a peace of mind.

Minis are not AKC recognized thus these are simply Pei that are not up to breed standards. They can be AKC registered but in the AKC show rings are considered "faulted". There are some breeders who are working to get these smaller arieties recognozed. Here is the link for the Miniture Shar Pei Club of America (MSPCA).

http://mspca.net/

You absolutely want to research thoroughly BEFORE you buy, same as you should with any puppy.

I would never unless I really knew the breeder ship a pup, that is no way to pick the proper puppy for your family and a good way to be scammed

Make sure you ask a lot of questions. Shar Pei have many health issues. See if you can get her to give you contact information of other owners with her dogs.
