So we woke up to see dark brown spray on the floor. At first I thought it was throw up but then realized it was diarrhea. It looked like someone sprayed..well you get the idea. The strange and scary part is when she went outside and came back in she had a piece hanging out of her backside. She was scooting around and I grabbed a paper towel and pulled it out. It was like 2.5 feet long. I have know idea what it was but it was 1 piece. Has anyone had this happen? It happened again in the middle of the night but only about 7 inches worth. I am a bit freaked out about it. She is acting normal and drinking and eating OK. She now is squatting outside with nothing more coming out. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Does this need a vet visit?
Thanks much.

What was the piece? Was it actual solid stool? I would save it and take it up to the vet if you can.
Busypei or one of the health/diet mods can help you figure out dietary issues.
What is the last thing you know she ate?

I have had to help pull out a poop in which a string, a hair or some long twig was imbedded. Thank heavens for plastic poop bags! I have never experienced spray diarrhea though--it just got stuck halfway out. I don't know about the diarrhea, that is worrying.

You want to keep a close eye on this as there have been cases where dogs have eaten string or yarn or such and it has gotten tangled in the intestine and having cut off circulation causes damage to the intestine, infection and even death. Dont mean to scare you but it has happened to member's Pei. Cher just lost her Harvey a few months back from this.

Watch appetite, temps, for diarrhea or vomitting (or inability to have bowel movement) or for lethargy or bloat.

Thanks for the responses. I was wondering if it was paper she got into or maybe something outside. There was no blood in her stool. I did see her eating grass yesterday. She ate her dinner tonight and has not gone outside in a bit. I was also concerned about intestinal issues and wondered about an x-ray to be safe. I also think about gum she ate in Dec and wondered if that was still in her system somehow. It was the bubble tape and she ate it all. The Vet did not say she would have an issue with passing it though. I have to leave for a business trip tomorrow and I am so anxious about this issue. My wife will need to monitor closely.

I've only had it happen with hair from my granddaughters that the dogs somehow eat on a fairly regular basis  I'd keep a close eye that it wasn't string or something like that that can get bound up.

Did you look thru the poop to see what was in it? If it happens again thats what I would do..If she is eating and pooping thats a good sign.
If she acts diff in any way I would do a vet check.

I kept a sample in case we needed to go to the Vet. I am off to Louisiana for business so I can't get her to the Vet until Sat. She is acting normal and eating well. I will be worried sick while I am away.
