Hello everyone. I have been feeding them grain free kibble mainly James Wellbeloved or Wafcol. There aren't many grain free varieties in the UK however I have now decided to give home cooking a go. I am looking for some ideas as to what to cook. Has anyone got any tried and tested recipies to share? [

Welcome to the forum! Your Pei are gorgeous! Here is a basic homecooked recipe we use sometimes... Quote: 1 chicken (2-4lbs of chicken parts with skin & bone) OR 2-3 lbs meat with bones/fat/cartlidge. 8-16oz liver (chicken or beef) 1 -2 bunches of spinach or kale or collard greens 2-4 cups broccoli or asperagus or brussel sprouts or califlower or green beans. 4-6 carrots 2 cups cranberries or blueberries (optional) 4-8 potatos or yams/sweet potatos 1-2 cups Quinoa or dried peas
Boil chicken or meat then remove & debone. Retain the broth. Throw bones away but retain meat, fat, skin, cartlidge and return to the broth. Add vegetables & Quinoa or dried peas and simmer till tender then remove from heat. Add 1-2 cans salmon or 2-4 tins sardines. Refridgerate (or freeze) till served. Serve alone or mixed with kibble instead of canned food. Also add a couple Tbsp of yogurt and lecithin.
*This recipe should supply essential Vitamin K2, Vitamin D, Omega FAs & antioxidents as well as glucosamine & other nutrients. We do add a calcium/D3 supplement to this.
For one dog this could be split into 2-3 containers and provide for a week or so. Just freeze anything you dont plan to use within 4-6 days and keep the rest refrigerated.

Just a quick update, home cooking is going great so far. My girls are loving it! First night they had rainbow trout with potato, carrot, cabbage and broccoli. Breakfast was sardines and veg and tonight on the menu is lamb liver with potato, carrot and greens. I have worked out how much its costing and so far its coming in just under the cost of a bag of kibble which lasts us around 20 days. Happy days!

Glad it's going well for you and your pei's are just gooooorgeous! On the same note of the whole home cooking thing, I was going to ask...someone had suggested to me to maybe mix in some rice with Chyna's dog food so as to make it stretch further. Is this a bad idea? I've heard of people mixing rice, beef, and broth for dogs before, but is it real unhealthy or anything?

Bluebell's eyes started to become red and sore looking and I assumed it was most probably a reaction to what I was feeding her so I switched back to kibble and her eyes returned to normal. I still add sardines into their kibble and have just purchased some salmon oil so I will update shortly to tell you how it's going. They both love fish so I'm sure it will go down a treat!

Apologies for my post being a bit delayed...I would personally avoid rice because it's a grain. Its found in a lot of pet foods because its used as a filler. I used to feed JWB ocean white fish and rice but changed to a grain free kibble because one of my girls developed a skin infection. Since changing to grain free it cleared up and she now has a lovely healthy coat. This is just my experience with rice, others may tolerate it better. When I was home cooking I'd add sweet potato and veg's to meat and fish, I think this is a healthier option

The problem with Rice in Kibble is that it is not quality and can possibly go rancid. Grains are not good for pei if they are allergic to them . I find I can give Dee Wild or Brown Rice on occassion with no problem i just cook it fresh, and don't serve it continuous- I also use potatoes and sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips, for my carbs. these don't seem to have allergy problems. Although some dogs are prone to yeast may eliminate them .
