hi guys ... update he is fevering sice yesterday i brought him to the ER , since he is on antibiotics already, the dr did subQ IV and the fever went down, they taught to do the subQ IV , so i did it this morning, he does not have fever this morning and i got back from work the fluids are not absorbed yet, i took him temp and heis fevering again, 103.8. he dr yesterday talked to the internal med who was seeing him at the hosp, (same company, the hosp was an hour away, the one he was confined at. so i brought him to the er close to me) the options are, subq and continue aspirin, or put him on steroids, but their concern is his skin. please help, he was doing well at home wounds are great and he is eating, and now he is fevering again! ((

So sorry to hear that Sam is fevering again. When MeiLi had reoccuring fevers, I had to find the trigger. Her last real bad fever was 106.4 last March. For her I think it was chicken. I changed her diet to home cooked made with Honest Kitchen Preference, eggs, filtered water and grass fed or organic meat. No more chicken or anything with chicken fat. I don't feed her kibble anymore. She does get Stella and Chewy's dehydrated beef paddies for treats. She also get 3/4 of a generic Claritin each day for allergies. The trick is to find out what is triggering the fevers. It could be anything environmental or food related. I also don't use anything with perfume around the house, pet safe cleaners and filtered water. What supplements do you give Sam?

I'm sorry that Sam is feeling poorly again. I don't recall - but did the ER run a full blood work up on Sam? If his fevers are returning (and so quickly after treatment) I would suspect an infection or something otherwise being off (e.g., kidney/liver function). In January Enzo started suffering from reoccuring low grade fevers. I took him to the vet twice and his Chem 20 panel came back ok. He got worse and we took him back and his values were way off...we just failed to catch something. You might ask to have lab values retested just to be safe (and ask them to run the most comprehensive tests that they can).
What type of FSF protocol is Sam on? (again, I'm sorry if you've already listed these).

Im wondering if the antibiotics given were perhaps effective in cutting back on the bacterial populations but perhaps not quite effective enough to get the infection wiped out entirely. I would sure want to have Dr Tintle consulting on his case....can you send her an email or ask your Vet there to give her a call at her clinic in the AM?

What do you mean by the sub-q not being absorbed right away? Do you mean that he has a bit of a water pouch and it stays there for a little while? That's normal. When we do Enzo's sub-q's, sometimes it can take a day or two to absorb. They will use the fluids as they need them.

Yes, the body will absorb the fluids as it needs them.....dont worry about that so much. More important that you can keep him hydrated...especially when he is fevering.
It is important to find out what IS triggering these recurrent fever events though.

thank you guys... i am reading posts re. prednisone, the dr gave sam 20 mg. every 12 hours, the dr who gave it to him is the ER dr, so i am going to call the dr who saw him at the hosp. (1and half hours away) thats why he was seen at this ER. sam will have another consult on saturday for recheck, hopefully the swelling will go down, the wounds are healed... it doesnt help that i dont drive to hways so i'm limited, omg i hope i can drive

Sam has lyme that is causing the fevers..You have to get rid of the lyme disease..The doxycycline is the correct drug..It does cause some intestinal upset...... You can't give the Colchicine but you can give litas remedies to stop the fevers and inflammation with out side effects..Off the colchicine can also caue the fevers. So you HAVE to replace it. Did the test show a staph or Strep infection.? It does sound like he had STSS.I would do as Dt Tintle recommends but I would also start litas remedies ASAP. Hes not going to feel wqell until the lyme is under control and you get his fevers under control with out the use of Colchicine..You can safely use Litas Remedies Http://www.pets4homeopathy.com/

My Buster had Lyme back in October. He wasn't treated with doxy because doxy does nothing for him. He was switched to Amoxycillian. If he's still fevering and on antibiotics talk to your vet about possiblely switching the antibiotic for better results.
If he continues to fever even if the drug is switched there's something else going on. As far as Sub-Q fluids it can take sometimes 12-15 hrs for it to be absorbed into the body. How much are they giving him and how much are you giving him at home? You may need to adjust for him as his body may not need the dosage they have you giving.
